Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has praised teammate John Terry's loyalty following him signing a new short-term deal with the club yesterday.
The Blues captain extended his tenure for at least another year yesterday despite interest from abroad, with China, the Middle East and the United States being touted as the Chelsea icon’s most likely destination.
"He has had a fantastic career for Chelsea. It is not easy nowadays to start your career somewhere and finish it [there]," Fabregas told Goal.
The Blues playmaker was branded a traitor by fans of former club, Arsenal, upon joining London rivals Chelsea in 2014 after saying that he would “never sign for another English team.”
And Fabregas was quick to pay his respects to Terry for the announcement of his new deal.
"Very, very few players can say that, especially nowadays when everything is so tough and everyone demands so much from you and he has dealt with it very, very well and won a lot of trophies so it is very good from him," he said.
Terry has spent his entire career at Stamford Bridge, making over 700 appearances since joining in 1995 aged 14.
It is believed that the 35 year-old was contemplating offers from overseas of as much as £300,000-a-week and guaranteed playing time, but instead opted to remain at Chelsea, taking a hit on his former £150,000-a-week wages and no longer being an automatic first-team starter.
Terry said to the Chelsea fans after the full-time whistle in the Blues’ final game of the season against Leicester: “I want to finish my career here.”
