Mason Mount hailed a “special” night after the Chelsea midfielder scored the winner for England in their 2-1 win against Belgium.
Mount netted his first international goal at Wembley when his deflected shot looped in to give England victory in the Uefa Nations League.
“It is a special achievement,” said Mount. “It doesn't matter how they go in!
"I just found myself in a bit of space in the box and only had one thing on my mind, to try to get it out of my body and shoot. [It was a] big deflection but you will take them.”
After Jack Grealish starred for England against Wales and with competition for midfield place in the squad, Mount was handed a start by Southgate.
"That is what you want in the squad, that competition, loads of players doing well and that is what you need to keep your standard high," said Mount.
"When you have your chance you want to do as best you can. It is a massive win for us."
England fell behind to a Romelu Lukaku penalty but after Marcus Rashford equalised from the spot they improved in the second half.
Mount said: "Coming into the game we knew they are ranked No1 in the world so we knew they were going to be on it. They are a very good team with very good players.
"They made it tough for us. We were hanging in there at half time, we got back in the game at 1-1 and we knew we could regroup, talk about what we could do better and fix the problems we were having.
"It was just trying to stay high, pressure the ball and trying to win the ball back as quick as we can. I thought we did that. And try to be better on the ball."
