Aston Villa 0-0 Sheffield United: Goal-line controversy after powerful show of support for Black Liver Matter

Aston Villa and Sheffield United kicked off the Premier League restart with a goalless draw at Villa Park - but the powerful show of solidarity for the Black Lives Matter movement was more important than any result.

With Premier League football returning after 100 days away due to the coronavirus pandemic, both sets of players warmed up in Black Lives Matter shirts.

Referee Michael Oliver blew the whistle for kick-off, before he and his officials joined all the players in kneeling for around 10 seconds.

As will be the case across the Premier League, the players also swapped out their names on the back of their match shirts with 'Black Lives Matter', with badges supporting that movement as well as the NHS.

It was goalless at half-time at Villa Park, but Sheffield United were unhappy that they were not awarded a goal just before the break.

Villa keeper Orjan Nyland looked to have carried the ball over the line from a free-kick, with replays suggesting he was comfortably inside the net, but the Hawk-Eye goal-line technology did not indicate a goal for the Blades.

Neither side could find a goal after the break as they shared the spoils, but the Blades will feel hard done by considering that first-half incident.

Still, both clubs - and the Premier League - will feel relieved that the match could go ahead at all, considering how impractical that thought seemed just a few short weeks ago.
