Arsenal confirm signing of Gabriel Magalhaes with defender signing five-year deal with the Gunners

Arsenal have completed the signing of Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes.

The Gunners have beaten a host of European names to the Brazilian’s signature, bringing him to the Emirates for a fee believed to be in the region of £25m.

He signs a five-year contract at the Emirates.

The 22-year-old defender becomes Mikel Arteta’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Gabriel’s countryman Willian on a free transfer from Chelsea.

Fellow Brazil internationals David Luiz and Willian unveiled Arsenal's new signing via the club's social media channels on Tuesday afternoon.

As well as Arsenal, Napoli made a concrete approach and there was late interest from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsenal have won the race, though, after Gabriel was won over by head coach Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu’s pitch on why he should join them.

Magalhaes will provide competition for fellow left-footed centre-back Pablo Mari, while long-term he looks like an ideal partner for the right-footed William Saliba.
