Elite sport - including Premier League and EFL football -  is set to continue behind closed doors as England enters a second national lockdown in a bid to combat the spread of coronavirus, the Government have confirmed.

On Saturday evening, Prime Minister Boris Johnson appeared on television to confirm that new restrictions were set to come into force across the country on Thursday (November 5) and last until December 2.

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Oliver Dowden subsequently reiterated on social media that while people should now work from home, travel to a place of work will be permitted where that is not possible.

“This includes (but not exhaustive) elite sport played behind closed doors, film & tv production, telecoms workers,” Mr Dowden tweeted.

“We understand people will have a lot of questions and @DCMS officials & ministers will be working through these and detailed implications with sectors over the coming days.”

Mr Johnson was asked specifically about whether Premier League matches would continue during the upcoming period as he fielded questions from reporters via video link after his address to the nation.

“I can say yes to the Premier League, I think with authority," he said while giving a thumbs up.
