London return targeted for World Athletics Championships in 2029

UK Sport and UK Athletics want the event back on British soil following the 2017 success in the capital

London could host the World Athletics Championships in 2029, according to UK Athletics (UKA) chief executive Jack Buckner.

UK Sport on Tuesday were unveiling their plans for future major events, with a return of athletics’ biennial Worlds at the London Stadium believed to be among the proposals.

UK Sport and UKA are putting together a proposal for hosting the event, last in London in 2017, to return to Britain in five years’ time.

And Buckner admitted London would be the UK’s forerunner as host should a bid prove successful.

He told BBC Sport: “We’d love to have another crack at 2029. We just do a great job. Everyone talks about the atmosphere at every event we’ve done.

“We have to do a feasibility study and look at the various options. We can’t definitely say it’ll be London, but it would be in our mind given the success before.”

The London Stadium, having hosted the Olympics, Worlds and Diamond League events, would be the likely No1 choice as the venue.

The Alexander Stadium in Birmingham would be an alternative, after it hosted the athletics for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
