Arsene can follow the English way

If Arsene Wenger needs any advice as his side seek to make history by going a whole Premiership season unbeaten, he could do worse than ask his counterpart Nicky English at AFC Wimbledon.

The Arsenal manager this week admitted his champions-elect were feeling the pressure with only two games to play but, at the opposite end of the football pyramid, AFC Wimbledon have just one match left to claim their own piece of history.

The Dons need to avoid defeat against AFC Wallingford tomorrow to complete the Combined Counties season unbeaten after last night's 3-3 draw against Reading Town in which Kevin Cooper hit a hat-trick.

With the league and cup double safely in the bag, acting manager English today spoke of his pride in the club's achievement since their formation two years ago.

"Every time we play we are breaking records," said English, whose side will be playing in Ryman Division One next season. "We did the double, we have more points than anyone's managed before and Kevin Cooper broke the scoring record. Now there's just one record left and that's staying unbeaten for a season over 46 games. If we can do that, it won't ever be beaten in my opinion."

English is now hoping to take over as permanent manager when the club announce a successor to Terry Eames, who was sacked after a fall-out with coaching staff in February.
