The BBC is planning a new prime-time variety show which could rival the success of ITV's Ant and Dec.

Comedy duo Hamish McColl and Sean Foley - best known for their hit West End tribute to Morecambe and Wise, The Play What I Wrote - are the hosts.

Corporation chiefs hope to win huge family audiences with the double act, who perform under the name The Right Size. A pilot of the show called Foley And McColl: This Way Up, was filmed last week and will be screened on BBC1 this summer.

It has sketches, music and star guests including singer Will Young, Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe and Sir Roger Moore. If successful, it could be commissioned as a Friday or Saturday night series. "Sean and Hamish have got the most amazing double-act going - it just comes naturally," a BBC insider said. "It's an indefinable quality that Morecambe and Wise themselves had."

Foley and McColl won an Olivier Award for best entertainment and were Tonynominated in New York for The Play What I Wrote.
