Emilia Clarke has defended the nudity in Game of Thrones, highlighting that “it’s not what the show is about".

The actress, who plays Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO drama, said there should be less focus on the number of nude scenes because it “doesn’t matter”.

She said: “Kit [Harington]’s a**, someone else’s a**, my a**, it doesn’t matter! It’s not what the show is about, it’s not what any bit of acting is about.

“As for my character, I can count on one hand how many times I’ve been naked.”

Clarke added that the role of women in the drama should be highlighted instead.

“I can talk about the importance of women in this show until the cows come home,” she continued.

“It has gone a way to changing the landscape of the industry as we see it, which is really vital and really important.”

She said: “That was the moment I realised that alcohol can also be a depressant.

“I was kind of nursing a glass of wine going, ‘I don’t know why I’m not getting any happier from this!’”

Details on the final six episodes have been kept tightly under wraps ahead of next month’s premiere, but Clarke previously promised “shocking” scenes.

Last week, show bosses unveiled an official two-minute trailer showing Kit Harington’s Jon Snow and Sophie Turner’s Sansa Stark gearing up for an epic battle.

Game Of Thrones will return for a final series on April 15, simulcasting with the US at 2am. Episodes will be repeated at 9pm on Sky Atlantic.
