Henley-on-Thames is famously known as the home of British rowing, thanks to the Henley Festival, its glamorous annual regatta. An important event on the rowing calendar, the regatta puts this pretty riverside town in South Oxfordshire in the spotlight each year in June. The town is close to the M40 and the M4, and just 10 miles from Reading, where most London commuters drive to for trains to Paddington with a journey time of about half an hour. There are also direct, but less frequent, train services from Henley station. First-time buyers and families are attracted to the charming range of properties on offer. In the town centre, medieval one- and two-bedroom cottages and Georgian houses are popular, as well as large Victorian homes of up to five bedrooms to the west of the Reading Road, a short walk to the station. There are large detached houses in Norman Avenue in Henley itself, and further out in Woodland Road, on the southern edge of the town. Period properties in the surrounding villages in Hambleden, Skirmett, Fingest and Turville are also popular.
