Hot coastal homes: Cornwall

By Kristy Gray
As Londoners plan their escape for the Bank Holiday weekend, many will head straight for the wide sandy beaches of Cornwall. The glorious 300-mile coastline of the South-West, dotted with idyllic fishing villages and seaside hamlets - now famous for their top restaurants and smart boutiques - also offers second home hunters plenty to think about.

A thriving holiday lettings industry means that charming coastal cottages and flats with sweeping harbour views can make tempting investments or easy lock-up-and-leave holiday homes.

According to new research by property website Zoopla, which compares average home values and property price changes between now and August 2011, the foodie mecca of Padstow has topped Cornwall's property hotspot table, with the highest average home value of £349,413 (see the full table below).

Moving up to second place in the table from fourth place last year, was South Cornwall's harbour town of Fowey, with average property values increasing by 1.89 per cent in the past 12 months to reach £336,068.

Port Isaac (average £331,769) and Wadebridge (£319,335) take the third and fourth spots, while the picturesque village of St Agnes completes the top five with a 2.53 per cent increase in average property values over the past year, taking the current value to £303,484.

We take a property tour and find coastal retreats in each of the top five property hotspots.
