Time for a £100m change in Greenwich

A former industrial estate close to Greenwich High Street is to be transformed with 181 new homes
There will also be student halls, a fitness centre and small units for start-up businesses. The design (right) is by award-winning architects HLM and Studio Egret West, who plan to do away with kerbs to create a “shared space” between motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
It is hoped that car speeds will be cut and safety actually improved. A similar “shared space” is currently being installed on Kensington’s Exhibition Road.
The first stage of the Greenwich scheme, which has been named The Movement, will be a hotel, planned to be open in time for the 2012 Olympics. The first homes should go on sale the following year/2013.
Richard Upton, chief executive of developer Cathedral Group, said: “We are planning to create a vibrant and truly sustainable destination in the Greenwich West area, which will also generate £275 million for the local economy over the next ten years.”
Work should begin this year but Cathedral intends to make the most of the site immediately, by offering “pop up” space on the site for community vegetable gardens.
