New code for bad builders
Unhappy buyers of new homes will be able to complain about their builder to an independent agency to be launched next spring under a new compulsory code of conduct
This important step follows an investigation by the Office of Fair Trading, which says that buyer satisfaction in new homes and standards of building have fallen dramatically since 2003.The investigation goes on to recommend that builders who consistently fail to meet standards should be denied access to government land and subsidies.
The agency will also be able to adjudicate and award compensation on issues not covered by existing warranties, such as delayed completion and serious problems with snags.
The new code will be drafted by the Council of Mortgage Lenders and the NHBC, and the OFT said it would seriously consider making it an officially approved code.
