Anyone for tennis in Idaho?

Andre Agassi is not only good at tennis. He plays the property game pretty well, too. This week he flew into the capital to interest Londoners in the great outdoors of western America by launching a 300-unit residential project in the state of Idaho.

Fairmont Tamarack is the first project for Agassi and his wife, Wimbledon-winning Steffi Graf, who are preparing themselves for life after tennis through Agassi Graf Developments. With the cheap dollar, it could entice a few British buyers to make the 13-hour journey to Idaho, dramatic, scenic sports state.

The family-friendly ski and golf resort of Tamarack is a 90-minute drive from Idaho’s capital, Boise. Now in its fourth season, Tamarack has a vertical drop of 2,800 feet and a snow-sure annual record of 300 inches of snowfall. But it is the resort’s year-round appeal, based around the 21-mile-long Lake Cascade, that Agassi thinks will appeal to prospective buyers.

“The Payette River Mountains have a unique natural beauty that you have to see to appreciate,” he says. “Tamarack is a privately owned resort and numbers will be restricted to 2,500 properties. You will feel like you own the mountain.”

Fairmont Tamarack, a joint project with Bayview Financial, will be a condo-hotel in the centre of the village, beside the lifts. Prices for the one- to three-bedroom freehold units, including furniture designed by Agassi and Graf, are from $750,000 to $3 million (£336,000 to £1,464,000), with completion expected by 2010.

Agassi, who with Graf and their children Jaden, six, and Jaz Elle, four, has owned a house in Tamarack since 2003, says it is a great family resort. “We go there every other weekend in winter to spend time together in the mountains.”

He admits: “Steffi’s skiing is better than mine, so I’ve now taken up snowboarding.”
