“Made in China” for most people means mass-production on a vast scale. Now Liliane Fawcett, whose respected gallery for contemporary design opened in 1984, is bringing a new image of China to London, with modern works that are by turn sharp-edged, witty, political, poetic and beautiful.
Fawcett discovered Chinese design whilst visiting her daughter at university in Beijing. "What is so exciting about Chinese design right now is that it is an unfamiliar and relatively untapped area,” she says. This impressive show features 16 designers, with 55 pieces of work.
See classic Ming chairs “deconstructed” by Shao Fen, whilst Li Lihong Ironically mimics big Western brands on hand-painted porcelain. July Chow adds Plexiglass to traditional Chinese furniture, whilst award-winning artist Gu Yeli adorns discarded chairs and benches found on the roadside with colourful wool.
