During its 20th-century heyday, Maple & Co was one of the world's leading furniture companies, both as a manufacturer and retailer, with a vast emporium in Tottenham Court Road.

The business perished in the Nineties, but its Kentish Town furniture factory, a handsome red-brick building with Crittall-frame windows, lives on as The Maple Building. It is now 57 loft-style apartments, above, including penthouses with roof terraces, and the entrance foyer has been restored as a smart lobby. Interior design is crisp and contemporary. Offices also occupy the ground floor, and there is a basement gym.

The building butts up against an office campus, with workspaces for creative-sector companies and entrepreneurs. The area is attracting a fresh wave of arty Londoners priced out of Camden, while a new private French school has added to the growing buzz. Kentish Town Tube station is five minutes' walk away.
