Chichester itself is not a big rental area, with four times as many houses available to buy than to rent. However, there is demand for lettings in the countryside from families looking to rent a second home, or who are looking to eventually buy in the area. There is also corporate demand from companies, such as Rolls-Royce, with facilities in nearby Portsmouth.
Sarah Johnson, lettings manager at Jackson-Stops & Staff, says two-bedroom flats in Wharf House in the popular canal basin area rent for between £750 and £1,200 a month. The agent has a four-bedroom modern house in Smugglers Lane, one of the best roads in Bosham, on the market for £2,850 a month. In Cakeham Road in West Wittering, the former telephone exchange has been converted into a spacious six-bedroom house, available for £2,250 a month.
