All breathe in: London’s skinniest house - measuring 99 inches wide - is up for sale

One of the skinniest houses in the country, measuring a mere 99 inches wide, is on the market for £450,000.
£450,000: this one-bedroom end-of-terrace house in Denmark Hill is just a touch over 8ft wide

At a mere 99 inches wide, it is surely one of the skinniest homes in the country. However, it is on the market in up-and-coming Denmark Hill, south-east London, so a shortage of buyers is unlikely - even at £450,000.

The one-bedroom, two-storey house at the end of a three-storey terrace is thought to occupy space once taken up by a side garden. The price of the 466sq ft house is a reminder of how strong London prices are, but Warren McCann, sales manager at Foxtons in East Dulwich, is marketing it and is convinced it will be snapped up.

“It is right across the road from Denmark Hill station and would be a perfect pied-à-terre for someone using the East London Line to get to work.”  he said.

McCann says the Grove Lane property is clearly a later addition to its neighbouring properties. “I expect it was done by a developer who wanted to fit in an extra property at some point,” he said.

He estimates that buying a one-bedroom flat in the same area would cost about £400,000 – the advantage of the slim-line house is that it is a freehold property and it has its own 75ft garden.

The living room is wide enough to fit in a sofa beneath the stairs and a dining table. But on the downside the property narrows at the back to give space for a side return meaning the galley kitchen measures just 5ft 2 inches across and, with kitchen units built along one wall, it is something of a tight fit.

“I think that the property will work for some people,” said McCann. “The space is there, it is just not in a traditional layout. Given its location and the garden, I think it will go pretty quickly.”

It is in fact one of two skinny homes which Foxtons is currently selling. A one-bedroom house, possibly a later addition to a period terrace, is on the market at Burnham Street, Kingston  for £375,000 with a reception room measuring 10’8 by 20’4 feet, and a bedroom which measures nine by 12’9 feet, just big enough for a double bed.

The narrowest home in the UK is in Scotland. A terraced property on the island of Great Cumbrae, off the North Ayrshire coast has a front façade measuring just 37 inches across although The Wedge, as it is known, spreads to 22 ft wide as it moves back from the road.
