New homes are surfacing along the route of the proposed Bakerloo line extension from Elephant & Castle to Lewisham.

The Bath House is between two stations earmarked for Old Kent Road, which is shedding its cheap Monopoly board image.

Working with Transport for London, Southwark council has unveiled an imaginative plan that aims to transform this busy highway into an apartment-lined, pedestrian-friendly, traditional high street with shops and cafés replacing retail parks and supermarkets.

There are also plans to reinstate a “green spine” along the old Surrey Canal, which was concreted over in the Seventies.

The Bath House spruces up an unloved corner and brings 51 apartments with sheltered balconies and winter gardens to block the roar of the traffic. Prices from £445,000 to £545,000. Call 020 8108 2283.

Nearby, Bermondsey Works is under construction. This stylish, contemporary block is made up of 148 flats and duplexes above a new free school and City of London sixth form academy.

The development is a definite step-up in quality for the area, with communal roof gardens, 24-hour concierge, a private gym, underground parking and cycle storage. Prices from £507,500. Call Telford Homes on 020 3538 3457.

Though 10 years off, the Bakerloo line extension is already encouraging buyers into this up-and-coming area.

The extension is forecast to provide a fast and direct link to the West End, with capacity for 65,000 extra journeys in each direction — a great boost for property values.
