Sheila Caffell was the adopted sister and victim of Jeremy Bamber, who was found guilty of murdering five members of his family at White House Farm in Essex in 1985.

The murder scene was made up to look as though it was a murder-suicide committed by Sheila but after further investigation police arrested Jeremy.

It comes as ITV releases a six-part dramatisation of the White House Farm murders, 35 years later.

Here, we take a look at the life of Sheila Caffell and how she was initially implicated in the killings.

Who is Sheila Caffell?

Sheila was born as Phyliss to the 18-year-old daughter of a senior chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

At just two weeks old, she was given up by her mother and put into care by the order of her grandfather.

Then at three months old, she was adopted by Nevill and June Bamber, who renamed her Sheila.

The couple from Essex were unable to have their own children and had already adopted a son - Jeremy.

During her childhood, Sheila attended various schools in Essex, Sussex, Norfolk and London.

Relationship with Colin Caffell and her adopted family

At 17-years-old, she found out she was pregnant with her boyfriend Colin Caffell's child but her parents arranged an abortion.

Sheila then returned to her studies at a secretarial college before training to become a hairdresser and she also worked as a fashion model for a short period of time, spending two months in Tokyo with an agency.

When she was 20, she married Colin and soon she was pregnant again.

The couple lost the baby when she was six months pregnant and she suffered another miscarriage before giving birth to twin boys, Daniel and Nicholas in June 1979.

After having her sons, Sheila stopped modelling and lived off welfare and low-paid jobs such as cleaning and as a waitress.

She got divorced from Colin soon after amid reports that he had an affair.

The mother-of-two found soon fell into a new friendship group where she was given the nickname "Bambi" and became involved with partying, drugs and older men.

Sheila's relationship with her adoptive mother was troubled and worsened after her abortion.

It is reported that June began calling her the "devil's child" as their relationship completely fell apart.

Her history with mental illness

Sheila had quite a long history of mental health issues which included violent outbursts and banging her head against walls.

She was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1983 after she was referred to a psychiatrist by her family, who had described her as agitated, paranoid and psychotic.

Sheila had also spoken about killing herself, but doctors did not believe she was a genuine risk.

She spent some time in hospital and still took anti-psychotic drugs when she was discharged, but was then readmitted in 1985 - five months before her death.

At one point she came to believe she had been in direct contact with God and that people, including her boyfriend, were trying to kill her.

Four weeks later, she left hospital but continued to have monthly injections of a drug which had a sedative effect.

From that point forward, Sheila had little time with her sons.

According to her brother, the family had spoken about putting them into foster care on the night they were all killed.

Why was Sheila Caffell accused of the White House Farm murders?

Her history of violence and psychotic episodes created a strong case for her possibly killing four members of her family before turning the gun on herself.

Her brother Jeremy Bamber also claimed that he had received a phone call from his father to say that Sheila had "gone crazy" with a gun on the night of the killings.

Sheila was found with the murder weapon, a .22 rifle, lying on her chest pointing towards her neck.

She also had a bible to her side, which the defence barristers claimed suggested a ritual killing.

From the start of the investigation, police believed that Sheila had killed herself and her family.

Her brother told Essex Police that she knew how to fire a gun and that she had a "deep and intense dislike" of her mother.

Who is Jeremy Bamber?

Born in 1961 as Jeremy Marsham, he was adopted by June and Nevill Bamber that same year.

Jeremy attended a private prep school and then went on to boarding school in Norfolk.

According to his friend Brett Collins, he was sexually assaulted aged 11.

On August 7, 1985, the police received a call from Jeremy at 3.30am.

He claimed his father Nevill had called him to say his sister, Sheila had "gone crazy" and had got ahold of their father's rifle.

June's body was discovered with Sheila's, while Nevill's body was found in the kitchen. His dad had been shot eight times and had also been beaten.

Jeremy's girlfriend at the time, Julie Mugford, later implicated him, saying he was after his £436,000 inheritance.

During his trial in 1986, Ms Mugford told the court that Jeremy had spoken about sedating his family and setting the farm house on fire, before plotting to hire an assassin to kill them.

Jeremy is currently serving a life sentence at HM Prison Wakefield.
