The latest of our popular Homes & Property series tells you how to enjoy London - its homes, designs, bargain shops and hot new areas
Alistair Appleton
Presenter Alistair Appleton
In our last show, we looked at the popular family area of Herne Hill. A favourite with a continental feel, it has it all - spacious Victorian homes and green spaces. It is sandwiched between posh Dulwich and sharp Brixton.

There are affordable houses (you can get a good four-bedroom house there for £700,000) and a strong sense of community. One mother says: “Once you come here, you stay.”

'Herne Hill is a family favourite with a continental feel, and prices are 20 per cent less than nearby areas'

There is also a railway station, lots of delis and proper village shops, some of the best schools in London and wonderful Brockwell Park with its famous restored lido. Prices are 20 per cent less than neighbouring areas - probably because there isn’t a Tube line.

Amazing spaces: presenter Alistair Appleton discovered the life-changing impact of creating a basement. It is the most expensive conversion you can do, at £300 a square foot, but architect-designed basements can give you uplifting light and masses of space.

Alison Cork did a great job on her bargain hunt finding luxurious furniture and a new, modern oak staircase at a fraction of the price you might expect. The staircase makes the perfect entrance to your new basement and costs only £900 direct from the maker, while some luxurious red-glass worktops come in at less than half-price once you know where to go - the wholesalers and manufacturers rather than glamorous showrooms.

Gardens: a garden is not only lovely to look at but can also save money if you mix flowers with vegetables. Gardener Andy Sturgeon met a woman who has sunflowers and cosmos mixed in among her deliciously sweet tomatoes and plump raspberries.

Don't miss the fifth show in this series on Thursday 20 November, at 7:30pm on ITV1.
