Aston Villa have agreed a £28million deal with Brentford for the signing of striker Ollie Watkins.

Watkins, named Championship Player of the Season last term after scoring 26 goals across the regular season and play-offs, was of interest to a number of Premier League clubs, but is relishing the prospect of a reunion with former Bees manager Dean Smith at Villa Park.

Brentford, who earlier this month completed the signing of striker Ivan Toney from Peterborough, had started the window asking for around £25m for the former Exeter man, but have now agreed a deal which could rise to £33m after add-ons.

Watkins, who trained with the Bees on Tuesday morning ahead of the start of their Championship campaign this weekend, is expected to undergo a medical on Wednesday before completing his move to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old was converted to a striker by Smith's successor in west London, Thomas Frank, following the sale of Neal Maupay to Brighton last year and has flourished through the middle, attracting interest from Crystal Palace as well as a number of other top-flight clubs.

Brentford were resigned to losing the forward after failing to beat Fulham in the play-off final last season and are also listening to offers upwards of £20m for winger Said Benrahma.
