Surrey have announced the permanent signing of Laurie Evans, who came through their academy more than a decade ago.

Evans, 32, left Surrey in 2010 for Warwickshire, and has spent the last couple of seasons at Sussex.

Evans has spent the last two Bob Willis Trophy matches on loan with Surrey, because he is not required for first-class cricket with Sussex. In the last couple of years Evans’ stock has risen in franchise cricket and he was part of England’s 55-man training squad this summer and played for the Lions this winter.

He will rejoin Surrey on a permanent two-year deal at the end of the season. Also joining Surrey is the Somerset quick Jamie Overton.

Evans said the move “almost feels like coming home”.

Alec Stewart, Surrey’s Director of Cricket, said: “I have known Laurie since his days in our age group teams and at our Club, Malden Wanderers, and am well aware of his abilities and strong character.

“With the number of players we already provide to the England setup – and potentially more to come in the near future – it was important to bring an experienced batsman into our squad. Laurie knows the Club inside out and will add great value to the dressing room.”
