Glamping in Shoreditch, Airbnb-style: Mercedes ambulance converted into 'Ruby the Glampervan'

An Airbnb host in London has transformed a run-down Mercedes ambulance into a cool and compact campervan in the city.
A mini-break in a former ambulance might not be everyone's idea of a luxury getaway -  but "Ruby" is no ordinary former ambulance.

Owner Christabel Beeson, 26, who runs an events company, fell in love with the old, run-down ex-service vehicle and spent six months transforming it into a campervan that still looks like an old Mercedes ambulance from the outside but has a wow-factor interior.

Surprisingly it fits a king-size bed, oven, gas hob and a fridge, and offers wi-fi and the use of an iPad. Other fancy features include luxurious bedding from the White Company, a wood-burning stove and a sink with running water.

Beeson christened the vehicle Ruby and says: "She had good vibes and I love the fact that the outside is nondescript yet the inside is 'wow'."

The glampervan is available to rent on Airbnb as a chic London getaway for £150 a night. Ruby can be your base in Shoreditch - or she can take you off for a road trip across the country.

There's a box of treats, including breakfast supplies, and a "first-aid" cabinet - a nod to Ruby's former life as a working ambulance - that now stocks drinks.

While most Airbnb hosts in London use their income to help pay the rent/mortgage, according to the site, Beeson plans to use hers to create a whole fleet of quirky ex-service vehicles to offer guests city accommodation with a twist.
