From Christie’s to Tanzania

Knightsbridge flat of former Christie’s director to be sold with some of the proceeds to be donated to a charity for children.
Former Director of Christie’s Franca Mercati is selling her Ovington Square flat for £1.35 million.

After working for 20 years at the auction house, she has decided to move to Tanzania to set up a charity.

Italian-born Mercati was drawn to Africa as she has a keen interest in wildlife photography. During her time there she witnessed great poverty and wanted to help.

She intends to use some of the proceeds from the sale of her London home to fund her new charity – Compassion for Children – which will help provide water wells and hand out donations to young people.

She says: “The people in Tanzania are the most gentle I have ever met in my life. They are very welcoming and I wanted to help them. The charity needs cash so I have decided to sell my flat and move there.”

Her one-bedroom Knightsbridge apartment is for sale through Marsh & Parsons.
