The rich and famous crave privacy and security so it is little wonder they snap up private islands. Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Shakira and Richard Branson are just some of the celebrities who have bought their own remote hideaway.
A few miles off the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, 200-acre Isola di Mal Ventre is close to Porto Cervo, the fashionable Sardinian glitterati hangout where Gwyneth Paltrow, Rihanna and Beyoncé like to spend their holidays.
The island has not been subject to any planning application since its current owner, a British businessman, bought it in 1972. However, a local architect suggests a fabulous low-rise villa could be constructed around the remains of former buildings.
Listed at £1.2 million on, Isola di Mal Ventre could be a yacht lover’s paradise.
