Gunners face another summer of upheaval

Arsenal transfer news - LIVE!

The summer transfer window sees another period of change for Arsenal as Unai Emery assesses a squad which narrowly missed out on a top-four finish before being thrashed by Chelsea in the Europa League Final.

Emery's funds will be severely depleted after the club's failure to qualify for the Champions League, plus the calibre of player Arsenal can attract is reportedly also being affected - namely Wilfried Zaha. A budget of £100m will now be much closer to £40m.

Aaron Ramsey is already out the door on the free and must be replaced, while the club hopes to replace the much-maligned Mesut Ozil as more regular performers Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have been linked away after stellar seasons in England.

At the other end of the pitch, Emery is seeking defensive reinforcements with Celtic wing-back Kieran Tierney and Saint-Etienne centre-back William Saliba both big targets.

Arsenal sign Roord

Arsenal Women have signed midfielder Jill Roord from Bayern Munich.

The 22-year-old, who helped the German side to the semi-finals of the Champions League, will join the Gunners for next season.

Roord, who has been named in Holland's World Cup squad this summer, joins international team-mates Danielle Van de Donk and Vivianne Miedema at the club.

Roord told the club website: "Arsenal is one of the clubs in England that I really like.

In women's football, they've always been one of the top clubs.

"Of course there are some Dutch friends of mine who play there, so I've always followed them. I'm really looking forward to it."

Joe Montemurro's side won the Women's Super League for a third time this season, finishing seven points clear of Manchester City.

Arsenal tracking Sarr?

If you can score against them, why not join them? Arsenal are said to be preparing a move for Rennes winger Ismaila Sarr, but may face competition from Leicester.

The promising forward netted when the two clubs met in the Europa League quarter-finals and reportedly caught the eye of Arsenal boss Unai Emery.

MailOnline claim that Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers is hoping to hijack any deal for the 21-year-old although the Gunners may have the advantage, having made initial contact with the Ligue 1 outfit in March.

The report mentions that any deal would cost the north Londoners in excess of £25 million.

Why Arsenal missed out on top four

Stephan Lichtsteiner believes that a combination of luck and a heavy fixture list cost Arsenal a top-four finish.

A terrible Premier League run-in - five defeats, one draw and one win from their last seven games - left the Gunners fifth, and they must now beat Chelsea in Baku to qualify for the Champions League football.

“It is hard,” Lichtsteiner told Standard Sport's James Olley. “Five weeks ago, we were in the perfect situation.

"We gave too many easy points in our away games. We were also a little bit unlucky but we have to ask more from ourselves.

"At the end, of course, with so many games and the Europa League and everything, we lost a bit of energy in the last games.”

Lichtsteiner set to leave Arsenal

Stephan Lichtsteiner is on the brink of leaving Arsenal after admitting it would be “very difficult to stay” beyond the Europa League Final.

The 35-year-old defender has started 19 games this season following a free transfer from Juventus last summer.

He signed a one-year deal with the club retaining an option to extend for 12 months.

Lichtsteiner is pessimistic about his chances of that being taken and Standard Sport understands the likelihood is he will be released at the end of the month.

“I see it being quite difficult to stay but we are going to see what happens,” he said. “I don’t know anything. The only important thing is the Europa League Final now.

“I really want to win this cup and bring this club back to the top level, back to the Champions League and winning important titles.”

Lichtsteiner was brought in as cover for full-back Hector Bellerin but has seen midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles develop into a useful wing-back and right-sided defender.

Ozil on his role at Arsenal

Here's more from the Gunners playmaker on where he fits in to Unai Emery's tactical plans.

“If the coach speaks to me and tells me I won't play in a game it's something I need to accept and just get on with it,” Ozil told DAZN Dach.

“I've carried on working on making myself as fit and healthy as I could and it's worked out for me.  Now I'm playing, but of course it's the coach's decision if I play or not.

“I've had some injuries this season and I've had to miss some games. But I know when I'm fit I'll play matches.

“I know the quality I have. I think everyone has their qualities and mine are at No.10.

“If the coach wants me to do something and play somewhere else, you have to accept it and do that. That's something I've done and as a player and you just need to get on with what you're told.”

Barcelona want Aubameyang?

As uncertainty over Gareth Bale's future at Real Madrid continues, Zinedine Zidane is firmly on the lookout for a new star on the right with Eden Hazard coming in for the left flank.

Spanish publication DarioGOL report that Juventus' Paulo Dybala and Liverpool's Sadio Mane are key targets but Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubmeyang is being explored as a cheaper option. Real Madrid feel they could wrap up a deal for €85m (£74m), around half the price of Mane.

That would be a huge blow for the Gunners.

Ozil expects to stay

Is Mesut Ozil on his way out of Arsenal this summer? Not if the playmaker has anything to do with it.

The former Germany international appeared to have lost Unai Emery's faith earlier this season, but has worked hard to regain his starting role at No.10.

When Ozil was asked about potentially leaving the club before his contract expires in 2021, the Mirror reports him as telling DAZN Dach: "I don’t think there’s a chance of that to be honest.

"I’ve got two more years here and what happens afterwards is not in my hands. We’ll see then, but I’m proud to be at this club and really happy at this club."
