Cash-reward credit cards

Eight million customers of Barclaycard, the UK’s biggest credit card company, can now earn cash rebates of £10 for every £1,000 they spend at a range of local shops and retail chains.

The new Barclaycard Freedom scheme, which covers Pizza Express, LA Fitness, Yo! Sushi and many other outlets in the capital, is the latest reward programme on offer to credit card users.

Is it any good?

Barclaycard customers earn so-called Reward Money worth one per cent of their purchases at participating Freedom retailers. Higher rewards are on offer in some cases: Pizza Express, for example, will give £5 of Reward Money to card-holders spending £30. However, no supermarket chain or department store has signed up, and the rebates can only be spent at retailers in the scheme.

Anything better?

American Express’s Platinum card offers a market-leading cashback of five per cent for the first three months, and then up to 1.25 per cent, depending on spend. Generally, however, cashback and reward credit cards only make sense for users who pay off their bills in full each month.
