Wandsworth is traditionally the go-to spot for family houses, but the fashion for riverside living is adding a whole new layer of flats. Where once stood wharves, distilleries and the untidy side of commerce and industry, there are now new homes with river views.

As well as the regeneration district being built at Nine Elms, a newly created 57-acre housing zone covering the area from Clapham Junction to the Battersea waterfront has been established. Plans include Jubilee Bridge, a new pedestrian and cycle crossing to Fulham.

St John's Way is one of the fresh crop of developments on this patch — 540 homes, a mix of private and shared-ownership flats and houses by Peabody. Prices from £730,000. Call 020 7021 4842.

The Schoolyard, pictured, which has 119 flats in contemporary-design low-rise blocks, lies back from traffic-clogged York Road, but is close to Wandsworth Town station, the Common and Nappy Valley highlights such as Northcote Road and Michelin-star restaurant Chez Bruce. Two-bedroom flats start at £570,000. Call L&Q (0333 003 3710).
