Alexandra Burke has said she will always be by her boyfriend’s side following his announcement that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

Hull City defender Angus Macdonald, 26, revealed yesterday that he is battling bowel cancer after spending a year on the sidelines.

In an emotional post on Instagram, Macdonald praised the “good people around” him who are helping him through his treatment.

Burke, 31, then posted a sweet photograph of herself and Macdonald holding hands in Dubai on her Instagram story.

She captioned the image, 'Always by his side. Forever', and added a heart emoji.

The couple confirmed their romance just days ago, when Macdonald posted a photograph of himself and Burke at Sheesh restaurant in Chigwell, east London, on Monday.

Burke also shared a family snap from the meal on her Instagram story, writing: “Such a lovely afternoon, thank you Sheesh Chigwell.”

In their announcement about Macdonald's health diagnosis, Hull City said: “Angus has shown great strength of character in the way he has reacted to this news.

“The whole Tigers family join together in showing Angus continued love and will support him in his recovery. His physical and mental wellbeing are our number one priority at this moment in time.”

They added: “The Club kindly requests that supporters and the media respect the privacy of Angus and his family at this time. Please also note that any further updates on his progress will be provided by the Club.”

Macdonald later said the news was a “complete shock” and “hard to take and fully process.”

He added: “I’m blessed to have fantastic family and friends and some very good people around me to help me get through this, as well as amazing team mates and staff at the club who have been with me all the way through the past year.

“I’m getting my head around this new challenge that lies ahead. I will be ready to fight this head on, and I’m going to do whatever I can to get back to full health and back on that pitch.

“I’m going to take a few days away from social media, and get some alone time with my nearest and dearest.”
