Greenwich Maritime, which covers the historic town centre and the majestic park, is one of four Unesco World Heritage Sites in the capital — the others are the Tower of London, the Palace of Westminster and Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

Buyers are attracted to the international kudos that this status brings when they buy in the area, although Greenwich Peninsula — formerly a gasworks — seems an unlikely location in which to bask in culture. But this new neighbourhood, earmarked for nearly 16,000 new homes, is happy to compete, with glamorous high-rise architecture and lots of leisure and recreational amenities.

Apartments have been launched at Greenwich Millennium Village, above, in a peaceful corner of the peninsula, next to an ecology park and yacht club, and away from the busy 02 arena complex. Prices start at £365,000. Call 020 8305 2712.
