A mother who was attacked as she pushed her baby along the street in a pram was stabbed three times in the face, a court heard today.

Josephine Conlon, 36, was left bleeding and slumped over the pushchair after the alleged daylight attack in Downton Avenue, Streatham Hill, on Monday, December 30 last year.

Mark Brazant, 43, appeared in the dock this morning accused of attempting to murder Ms Conlon and was remanded in custody at Camberwell Green magistrates court.

“This is a case where the victim in question was attacked from behind, it’s a stranger attack”, said prosecutor Jennifer Fadaka.

“She was pushing her baby’s pram.”

She told the court Ms Conlon was “stabbed three times in the face”, suffering wounds below her right eye, on her left cheek, and one which “narrowly missing her jugular vein”.

Neighbours heard screams from Ms Conlon, a marketing manager, and she was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment after the 5.30pm stabbing. She is reportedly “doing well” in her recovery, while the young child was uninjured in the incident.

Brazant, from Ealing, handed himself in to police yesterday (Jan 2) and was charged with attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of an article with a blade or a point.

It is said he used a kitchen knife in the attack on Ms Conlon and was in possession of three knives in Wandsworth High Street yesterday when he was arrested.

District Judge Kasim Ezzat today remanded Brazant in custody until a plea hearing at the Old Bailey on January 31.

Brazant, wearing a prison-issue grey tracksuit, did not indicate any pleas during his five-minute appearance this morning.
