The release of public land for new housing is a key property theme this year, with one of the first big launches on the site of a former psychiatric hospital in Coulsdon.
Cane Hill Park, pictured, will bring 675 homes, green space, shops and health facilities to the Surrey commuter town. It replaces a landmark Victorian asylum, built on a hilltop in the London green belt. Prior to its closure in 2006, it controversially escaped a heritage listing and was later destroyed by fire.
Three older buildings that survived the blaze are being rebuilt, while new homes range from apartments to detached houses set in upgraded parkland.
Barratt, the developer, is offering the Help to Buy scheme on properties valued up to £600,000. Prices from £380,000.
