Wapping’s inland quarter is mostly built on the site of the old filled-in London Docks. Redevelopment along The Highway, Wapping’s main road, which starts in the shadow of Tower Bridge and runs east to Shadwell Basin, is providing more new homes than at any time since the first wave of post-docks regeneration in the Seventies.

London Dock, pictured, a neighbourhood of 1,800 homes being built on The Sun’s printworks site, will open up new pedestrian routes to the river and bring a public square, restaurants and a new secondary school. Prices from £829,950. Call St George on 020 7971 7880.

Tobacco Dock, a listed warehouse complex empty for 20 years, is destined to get boutiques, designer hotels and luxury housing. The Junction, a no-frills scheme of 26 flats overlooking Shadwell Basin, slots neatly into this revitalised district. A private rooftop garden for residents offers views of Canary Wharf and the City. Prices from £420,000. Call Telford Homes on 020 3620 8001.
