Gravity-defying

This two-bedroom house, called The Newton, at Linden’s Fusion development in Woking is the Evening Standard's "Home of the Year"

Priced below the £250,000 stamp-duty threshold, it proves that good design does not have to cost a fortune.

In an area with an oversupply of flats, Linden set out to change the local housing mix by building 86 two-, three- and four-bedroom houses with gardens for professional couples with young children.

Properties are clustered around attractively landscaped open spaces, providing a sense of neighbourhood.

Inside, space-efficient rooms are designed for modern living, with an open-plan ground-floor layout and multi-purpose "bonus room" in the (usually wasted) attic space.

The Newton house type has sliding glass doors that stretch across the back of the home and lead onto a patio area with low-maintenance garden.

"Green" design - solar panels, ground heat pumps, high levels of insulation - reduce carbon emissions and result in lower energy bills.

"Superb and outstanding" was the judges’ verdict.

Linden promises more Newtons at other developments. Other homes at Fusion are priced from £339,995.
