World Rugby chief Brett Gosper says he is concerned about the proposed investment in the Six Nations by venture capitalists CVC.

Reports on Tuesday indicated that a deal worth £300million has been struck to add to the company’s involvement in Premiership Rugby and Pro14 after giving up interests in Formula One in 2017.

World Rugby had tried to get a global league off the ground, but that plan was shelved and now CVC could have a huge influence over the game.

Speaking in Tokyo ahead of Friday’s World Cup kick-off, Gosper said: “With a high-funding owner of the sport that isn’t the governing body, calls might be made that aren’t in the interests of growth or perhaps player welfare.

"We don’t know if it will be good or bad."
