A promising future beckons for Dartford. The north-east Kent town is already a beneficiary of the high-speed rail link connecting Canterbury and King’s Cross.

Commuters going from London to towns such as Gravesend, Chatham, Gillingham, Faversham, Dartford, and Rochester will see their trains leaving the high speed Javelin line at Ebbsfleet and continuing their journeys via the North Kent and Chatham Main Lines.

In Dartford, bleak industrial land is being transformed with affordable and attractive new commuter homes.

The town lies on the old London to Dover road, in a valley where the River Darent flows. Beside the river, where the Phoenix Paper Mill was built in 1852, a new 400-home neighbourhood is being created around a millpond.

The complex, next to the train station, was a Wellcome pharmaceuticals base after paper making ceased. GlaxoSmithKline was a later owner but the site was wound down in 2008 and a masterplan drawn up for homes.
