Slough is not what one might call a beautiful place — but it is a Crossrail winner, and as such has registered the UK’s biggest house price increase, a whopping 19 per cent, over the last year, according to the Land Registry.

Wednesday September 14 was National Cycle to Work Day and Slough joined the team by introducing a number of bike initiatives, including a £140,000 cycle route across the borough and a “cycle hub” at the train station offering a repair workshop, changing and shower facilities, lockers and free wifi for cyclists.

Slough Urban Renewal, a regeneration partnership between the local council and developers, is involved in schemes to raise the profile of the town, known mainly for its massive trading estate.

Milestone is a development being built on land next to the old town hall, with 73 homes ranging from one-bedroom apartments to three-bedroom houses.

Prices range from £230,000 to £500,000, and buyers get a £100 voucher towards the cost of a new bike at one of the town’s cycle shops. Call 01753 326 106 for more information.
