In the 1830s, Thomas Cubitt honed his skills as a master builder in Stoke Newington before creating the elegant architecture and squares that his name in Belgravia and Pimlico.

Stoke Newington prospered until the early 20th century, when the more well-to-do moved further into the suburbs. Many homes became tenanted, and wartime bombs hastened the demise.
