Canning Town: new homes with private allotments

Recent regeneration in Canning Town is boosting the area's appeal and housebuilders are taking notice

Canning Town, previously a district where housebuilders feared to tread, is worth watching because it is set between Stratford's Olympic Park and Canary Wharf. The area is on the up and touted as a new hotspot. Developers, once put off by its run-down council estates, busy dual carriageways and the Blackwall Tunnel approach road, are impressed by recent regeneration.

Redevelopment of Rathbone Market, one of the East End's oldest, is the area's biggest project. Phase one is called Vermilion (pictured) — 271 homes, most in a 21-storey tower with colourful red exterior. It is a "green" building, too, with a "living" wall that encourages natural ecology. Residents have exclusive use of 30 on-site private allotments. Prices start at £225,000 and rise to £695,000 for a three-bedroom duplex penthouse. Call Hamptons International on 020 7758 8481.

East City Point, Canning Town, has one-bedroom apartments priced from £165,000. Call developer Countryside on 020 7437 1198. Affinity Sutton housing association is offering "Rent4Less" homes at the development.
