Camberwell on the Green:Art-Apart event to showcase works by talented local college students at new homes development

Communal areas and 10 of the 92 new flats at the area’s biggest new homes development, Camberwell on the Green, have been turned into exhibition spaces and galleries for the Art-Apart event on 30 November.

Camberwell College of Arts, founded in 1891, is stepping out of the shadow of nearby Goldsmiths, birthplace of the Britart movement in the Eighties.

Artwork by a talented generation of up-and-coming Camberwell students is being showcased at the area’s biggest new homes development, Camberwell on the Green, where communal areas and 10 of the 92 flats have been turned into exhibition spaces and galleries for the Art-Apart event on 30 November.

One show flat has playful Perspex “mobiles” suspended from the ceiling, transforming the living space into a multicoloured forest of vertical shapes; another flat features sinuous, Gaudi-style sculptures made out of expanding polyurethane foam.

Property developers are always keen to latch on to an area’s creative credentials to help promote sales, and here, it is Singapore-based Frasers Property. Prices from £446,000. Call 020 7368 4830.

From £446,000: new flats at Camberwell on the Green

Barely four miles from Trafalgar Square, Camberwell is in Zone 2 and is the first high point reached when travelling south from central London. Its elegant Georgian conservation area is a legacy of the district’s brief spell as a health resort, stemming from the reputed healing qualities of its mineral springs.

Today, the area is crowded, colourful, faintly bohemian, and slowly leaving its shabby side behind as a wave of new buyers lust after its handsome 18th-century architecture and new homes.
