Hot homes in Cornwall: coastal charmers

There is plenty to tempt Londoners seeking a West Country property, with spectacular seaside homes dotted along Cornwall's picturesque 300-mile coastline.
While the capital's property market has continued to heat up, many Londoners have been quietly setting their sights on homes close to the long, wide sandy beaches of the west country. But it's not just second home hunters who are being charmed by the 300-mile coastline, idyllic fishing villages and seaside hamlets of the South-West.

As the property price gap between London and the coast continues to widen, homebuyers have been selling up or downsizing in the capital, swapping compact city flats for spacious family homes by the sea - with change left over for a London pieds-à-terre or buy-to-let investment. And for those frequently returning to London, improved transport links, including six daily flights to London from Newquay, are making connections easier than ever.

Jonathan Cunliffe, head of residential for Savills in Truro, says the first few months of this year were the busiest since the office opened in 2006.

He said: "Interestingly the requirement is often for a home with income potential. We have sold a number of properties with additional cottages to let in recent months. Because many of our buyers are coming from London, the market has, to some extent, imitated London buying trends – with properties selling before the brochure details have even been produced and frequently at guide or above.

This has been unheard of in our market for years. This has led to prices recovering ground, however this should be caveated by the fact that in recent weeks the market has begun to cool once again, with some deals falling apart and some buyers making unrealistic offers.”
