Hot homes for techies: Richmond upon Thames

Move over Old Street, there's a new Silicon City on the map. Recent research by consultants KMPG reveals Richmond is the latest hi-tech capital of London, with more than twice as many people employed by the technology industry in this borough than the national average.

Online giants eBay and Paypal have already moved in, and easy connections to the M25, M3, M4 and Heathrow airport make the borough an attractive place to live for tech workers. And according to estate agent Savills, new buyers to the area are thinking long term, swapping inner-city flats close to traditional tech hubs for Richmond's larger homes and family houses.

Matthew Thompson, Head of Savills in Richmond, says: “Our research shows that 56 per cent of buyers in the area come to Richmond with a view to upsize, looking for a longer term family home. This suggests some workers could be looking to move away from areas traditionally associated with tech companies - such as Old Street – in favour of a better quality of life and larger properties.”
