Ariana Grande has responded after fans noticed that her new hand tattoo has been mistranslated in Japanese.

The singer shared an image of her latest inking on the palm of her hand, which was intended to read “7 rings” in Japanese characters to celebrate the success of her number one hit.

The 25-year-old soon deleted the post, which shows her hand peeking out from a jumper, though the image can still be seen on tattoo artist Kane Navasard’s account with the caption: “If you didn’t know, @arianagrande is a G.”

Grande’s fans immediately launched into a debate over the real meaning of the tattoo, with some suggesting that her choice of characters might in fact translate to “7 rounds” or “7 wheels” – but in Chinese characters.

However, others pointed out that, when read using Japanese symbols, it could actually could refer to a small barbeque grill, known as Shichirin.

“Ariana Grande’s new tattoo 七輪 means Japanese style bbq grill, not 7 rings. If you want to know about 七輪, just google SHICHIRIN,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

Grande responded, telling the fan that she was supposed to add “one more symbol” to the inking, but couldn’t deal with the pain.

“Indeed, I left out "つの指" which should have gone in between,” she wrote.

“It hurt like f*** n still looks tight. I wouldn’t have lasted one more symbol lmao. But this spot also peels a ton and won’t last so if I miss it enough, I’ll suffer thru [sic] the whole thing next time.”

The ‘barbeque grill’ tattoo is the latest addition to Grande’s extensive body art, which includes a small bee placed behind her ear to mark the Manchester Arena attack in 2017, a crescent moon and stars on her hand and, most recently, the Pokémon Eevee on her upper arm.
