Hurry if you want the £400 off a new boiler under the boiler scrappage scheme: four million homes could qualify but there is only enough cash for 125,000, so you have to register early. If you are successful you can get a voucher for £400 off a replacement “A-rated” energy-efficient boiler.
Do I qualify?
Unless you are over 60 your old boiler must still be working and G-rated or worse. If your’s is 15 years old or more or has a permanent pilot light, it is probably G-rated. Landlords can apply for rented properties.
What do I do?
Register for the offer with the Energy Saving Trust (0800 512 012; www.est.org.uk) after getting a quote from an installer for the new boiler. The trust approves these applications and will send out the vouchers from 18 January. Vouchers are valid for 12 weeks after issue.
What’s the catch?
None really. A new boiler will mean lower gas bills and British Gas and Npower are offering to match the scrappage incentive — giving an £800 discount in total (but still shop around for the best deal). You have to pay for the installation yourself, sending off the voucher and invoice for the £400 refund. Low-income households may qualify for extra help.
