Complicité’s award-winning production of The Encounter will be made available to watch online for free.

The show, performed by the company’s artistic director Simon McBurney with the assistance of binaural sound and headphones for each audience member, debuted in 2015 to huge acclaim, transferring to Broadway and then back to London for more sold-out runs.

The recording of the show will now be available again for one week in May, and will be shown with a new introduction from McBurney that responds to the current moment. The broadcast is being made possible through arts organisation The Space.

The Standard’s five-star review of the show’s 2016 Barbican run described The Encounter as “a hypnotic, almost religious experience”. The piece won the Evening Standard Theatre Award in 2017 for best design. It tells the true story of National Geographic photographer Loren McIntyre, who became lost in the jungle on the border of Brazil and Peru in 1969 and met the Mayoruna tribe.

As in the theatre run, audiences at home will need to wear headphones to experience the sound design – playing out of speakers will not have the same effect.

There will also be a live discussion and public Q&A taking place over video link on May 20, with McBurney and guests including filmmaker Takumã Kuikuro in the Amazon. You can register to join in the Zoom discussion here.

The Encounter will be available from May 15-22 on Complicité’s website and YouTube channel.
