Tottenham continued pre-season with a 4-1 win over Reading at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday.

The hosts took a commanding 3-0 lead in to half-time through an own goal, Dele Alli and Heung-min Son before Jose Mourinho made a raft of changes.

Erik Lamela made it 4-0 with a direct free-kick but Reading pulled one back from the penalty spot through George Puscas.

Here are four takeaways from the match.

Hojbjerg not a true holding player

Summer signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg completed 75 minutes in Spurs' midfield two, first alongside teenager Harvey White and, from half-time, next to Moussa Sissoko.

The Dane was signed from Southampton as the ball-winning midfielder Spurs have missed since the decline of Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier's move to defence – but he is a different kind of midfielder to his predecessors at No.6.

While Wanyama and Dier were both happy to sit deep and often drop between the centre-backs, Hojbjerg prefers to play box-to-box and he spent the first half pushing ahead of teenager White.

The Dane was more disciplined beside Sissoko but his fondness for getting forward means he is not the true destroyer many Spurs fans were expecting to arrive in London and it will be intriguing to see how Mourinho uses him next season when he has a full raft of midfielders available.

Dele lively after difficult spell

The last few months have been another difficult spell for Dele Alli, who missed the majority of Project Restart with another hamstring problem.

This week began with his latest omission from the England squad as well as revelations from Amazon Prime's upcoming documentary of Tottenham's 2019-20 season that Mourinho considers him a "s*** trainer" and has concerns as his "party boy lifestyle".

Alli needs to return to form in the season ahead to change perceptions and win back his place in the England squad ahead of the European Championship on home soil.

Encouragingly, he has started pre-season well and he was lively and hard-working against the Royals, adding Spurs' second goal with a cute finish from Lucas Moura's pass after winning possession in the build-up.

Vocal Hart a leader

In the cavernous empty stadium, it was easy to immediately see part of Joe Hart's appeal to Jose Mourinho.

The summer signing replaced Hugo Lloris at half-time and was incessantly vocal in 30-minute cameo (Paul Gazzaniga played the final 15 minutes), constantly barking instructions and encouragement to his teammates.

Mourinho has made no secret of the fact that he is looking for more outspoken leaders in the dressing room and clearly Hart fits the bill.

Youngsters given a chance

With another pre-season friendly in 24 hours against Birmingham, Mourinho named another mix-and-match squad, with a bench largely made up of young players.

With Harry Kane and Harry Winks among Spurs' missing senior stars, fans will have been encouraged to see a start for homegrown midfielder White, who acquitted himself well, and substitute appearances for academy graduates Dennis Cirkin, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Jamie Bowden and 16-year-old Dane Scarlett.

Youngsters Jack Clarke, Alfie Devine and Ryan Sessegnon also played a part as Spurs finished the game with an encouragingly youthful XI.
