Thousands of people are feared dead after a massive landside smashed into a village in Afghanistan.

As many as 2,000 people are feared missing after the landslide triggered by heavy rains buried a village in northeastern Afghanistan.

Hundreds of homes were left buried under rubble when a section of a mountain caved in at 1pm this afternoon.

Colonel Abdul Qadeer Sayad, a deputy police chief of Badakhshan province, said: “At least 400 to 500 people are still under a huge landslide, and they are all believed to be dead. This number may increase.”

Many people were at home when the landslide took place as Friday morning is a day off in Afghanistan.

A mine collapsed and killed at least 17 people in northern Afghanistan on Wednesday.

The mine in Samangan province collapsed while illegal mining was taking place.
