New York bus crash leaves vehicle dangling from Bronx overpass

A bus has been left dangling from an overpass after it careered off a road in New York.

The driver was seriously injured and eight passengers sustained minor wounds in the crash which occurred in the city’s Bronx neighbourhood just after 11pm on Thursday.

Footage of the bendy bus posted on social media showed the vehicle split along its joint – with the back part on the overpass and the smashed front resting on the highway ramp below.

The city’s fire department (FDNY) said several units had been sent to the scene at the interchange between the Cross Bronx and Major Deegan expressway.

"The bus fell approximately 50 feet onto the access road. The patients suffered injuries consistent with a fall from such a great height," the FDNY said in a statement on Friday.

Firefighters were working on “making sure all the fuel and other hazardous materials within the vehicle are secured” before pulling the bus fully onto the road, the department added.

The injured passengers and the driver were taken to hospital for treatment.

It is not yet clear what caused the crash but no other vehicles were involved.
