Bird Box Challenge: Netflix begs fans 'don't try this at home' as meme craze sweeps the globe

Olivia Tobin3 January 2019

Netflix has urged fans of Bird Box not to injure themselves when recreating memes of the popular film.

The streaming company said it does not want people “to end up in the hospital due to memes”.

The thriller, one of Netflix’s most popular films screening at the moment, sees Sandra Bullock and her children navigate to safety wearing blindfolds.

If the film’s characters look at the villains of the film, they will be driven mad and eventually kill people.

Following the film’s popularity, fans have created the Bird Box Challenge, which involves people trying to do everyday tasks blindfolded and posting attempts on social media.

Netflix tweeted: “Can’t believe I have t say this, but PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE.

“We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in hospital due to memes.”

The film, Netflix said, has been watched by 45 million subscriber accounts in its first week.
